Comedy

Fresh meat is a comedy television series that aired on channel four in 2011, it is about the lives of six university freshers at the fictional Medlock University in Manchester who all share a house together. The ending of the Series is left open as it is a series of episodes and there maybe more series. The timeline of the show is Linear as it is all in order, the rpogramme starts when the students get to university and finishes at the end of their first year. Fresh Meat is a realist show as it shows the everyday lives of university students, During the scene I have embedded  they use a lot of over the shoulder shots as it shows who the person is speaking to at the time, this occurs during 0:25 till 0:27 and 0:42 till 0:44. At the start of the video below it fast forwards through them getting drunk, this shows the audience what they have been doing but gets to the funny bit faster which stops the audience getting bored.

Docudrama

Schindler's list is a docudrama made in 1993 about Oskar Schindler a German businessman who during holocaust saved over a thousand Jewish refugees. The film was directed by Steven Spielberg and based on a book called Schindler's Ark by Thomas Keneally. The film is filmed like a documentary, about forty percent of the film was shot with a handheld camera to make it seem like a documentary. Nearly the entire film was also shot in black and white this could be so the audience doesn't know when the film was made so it makes the film seem even more real and more like a documentary. The film has a linear timeline, it is all in order of when it really happened. Music is being played through the majority of this clip, the music creates a dramatic and emotional atmosphere to go with the emotional scene. Also the film is a realist movie as it shows real events of the past, The ending of the film is closed as it is a docudrama about events of the past and the events finish at the end of the film. The scene with the girl in the red coat, shows a girl amongst the chaos in Nazi Germany, the surroundings and people around her are all in black and white however her coat is red this is symbolic, It makes the little girl stand out to the audience while the chaos around her continues, during this scene it cuts to Oskar Schindler on a hill then back to the girl which makes the audience think he is looking at the chaos that is going on in front of him. But the way coat is in colour even though everything else is in black and white also makes you think that maybe Schindler is looking at the little girl(Look at 0:07 of the video and ends at the end of the video).

Crime-Drama

Deadwood is an american crime-drama first made in 2004 and ended in 2006, it stars Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane. The story is set in the 1800's in the old west, in a town called Deadwood. It follows the life of the towns people and the crime and corruption in the town. The first season of this programme has a linear timeline, as all the events in the programme happen in order. The Programme is a realist programme as it shows the everyday life of people in the old west even though these characters maybe fictional. The endings of the first and second series are left open as the show continues but the ending of series three is closed as it is the final episode of the show and the story needs to come to an end. The scene in deadwood where Bill Hickok gets shot, the camera is first aimed at the door as you see a blurred figure enter the saloon, the camera then pans across to a close up of Bill Hickok, in the background you can still see the blurred figure as he approaches Hickok. this builds suspense and the scene and makes the audience wonder who this figure is and what he wants with Hickok. This can be seen at the start of the video and ends at 0:07.

Period drama

The three part series red riding is a period drama, the first part is based in Yorkshire 1974, the second is based in 1980 and the third is based in 1984, they are all set in the same place. I have focused on the first part based in 1974, at the start of the programme after the title  you see what looks like a dead woman on the ground in what looks like a forest or wood. This starts off building the scene and the entire programme it makes you think about who killed her and why, this sparks curiosity and helps keep viewers watching the programme. nearly straight after the dead woman the screen goes blurred and when it finally comes into focus you can see a man with blood over his face, he then drops a gun, this makes you think he may have had something to do with the dead woman. Though as it is blurry at the start it makes me think that it is either a flashback or a glimpse of the future. The over all lighting of the programme is dark this gives the impression that the programme has a dark content. Though this is the first part of three the ending is closed, the same characters are in all the parts however there is a different story. This tv show has a linear timeline, it shows real life events in the order they original happened.

Introduction

This unit of work requires me to create this blog focusing on the format, structure and technical factors of single camera dramas. I have to find an example of the following genres, Period drama , drama-documentary, crime drama and comedy.
